“And tell me why I should help you?” The woman crossed her arms and glared at Bjorke.
“Oh, for pity’s sake, Aelsa. I thought we were past that. You don’t like me, I get that. But I need your help. You of all people should understand what’s at stake here. You left them. You left them for your family. I’m just trying to do the same.” Bjorke was seated in one of the leather chairs in the sitting room of the Lightpath’s small house, leaning forward, elbows on knees, her face earnest.
“Stenholm says you haven’t changed. You’re as selfish and self-centered as usual.”
It took a great deal of effort to control her temper at that remark. “Stenholm sees what he wants to see,” she replied at last, quietly. She couldn’t refute the fact that she had been selfish and arrogant. But that wasn’t the whole story.
Bjorke looked up at Aelsa. She might be a beautiful woman if she wasn’t so filled with resentment. It was clear Mabon took after her in looks, but the sweet young woman was nothing like her mother in personality. “Please. I need to set up a meeting with Carlo in Booty Bay. I know he wants to see me, but I’m not going up there. Will you help me?”
Aelsa knit her brows together as she thought. It was true that Bjorke had done a great deal to help Mabon these past few years, and she didn’t even bring that up. This request was not being leveraged against that friendship. “Very well. How soon do you want the meet?”
Relief flooded over Bjorke. It was only the first step in this ordeal, but it was a big one. “As soon as he is willing.” She stood and offered her hand. “Thank you, Aelsa. Thank you.”
“Hmph. Thank me later, if you live.” It was a common retort among those in a certain circle. Favors can’t be called in on dead men. “You’d best get back, before Mabon tries to feed your young friend.”
“I will.” Although, given that Pippa’s appetite rivaled Truitt’s, she doubted even Mabon’s cooking would dissuade her.
Aelsa offered an almost-friendly pat on the back as she held the door open for Bjorke. “I’ll be in touch.”
